Among households with $1 million to $3 million in total retirement wealth, median observed annual spending was $49,650 where guaranteed income made up 20 to 40 percent of that wealth, $64,420 at 40 to 60 percent, and $71,710 at 60 to 80 percent, which J.P. Morgan labels 30% and 44% more. The figures come from Chase credit card, debit card, electronic payment, ATM and check transactions in 2023 and 2024, with information that could identify individual customers removed before the analysis.

Adding guaranteed lifetime income combined with a more aggressive asset allocation can generate 29% more annual spending ability from retirement savings, excluding Social Security, and reduce downside risk by 33%. This is BlackRock’s own lifecycle model rather than observed household spending.
