Afraid to Spend Money in Retirement? The River and the Lake

If you saved for decades and stayed disciplined, why is it so hard to spend any of it in retirement? It is not willpower. It is how the money is set up.

Two kinds of money, and they behave nothing alike

Protected Lifetime Income is a river. It flows in every month for as long as you live, and if you are married it keeps flowing for the surviving spouse. You do not manage it. You do not time it. It just arrives, the way a paycheck did for your whole working life.

Your savings is a lake. It holds what it holds. Every time you take some out you watch the level drop. Nobody wants to be the one who drains the lake. So good savers do not touch it, and the trip they always meant to take keeps moving to next year.

The window that does not come back

There is a stretch of years early in retirement when you have your health, your energy and your time all at once. Those years do not come back.

Money you do not spend in that window does not get saved for a better time. A good deal of it simply goes unused, and the experiences it was meant to buy never happen.

Why this is a structure problem, not a discipline problem

You do not fix this by telling a careful saver to loosen up. You fix it by changing which bucket the spending comes out of, so that spending on the life you planned does not feel like draining the thing that keeps you safe.
